In season 12 of the WORLD Channel’s America ReFramed, co-producers Professor Vivek Bald, Alaudin Ullah, and Susannah Ludwig air the television and streaming premiere of their documentary “In Search of Bengali Harlem”:
As a teen, Alaudin Ullah was swept up by the energy of hip-hop and rebelled against his Bangladeshi roots. Now a playwright contending with post-9/11 Hollywood’s Islamophobia, he sets out to tell his parents’ stories. IN SEARCH OF BENGALI HARLEM tracks his quest from mid-20th-century Harlem to Bangladesh, unveiling intertwined histories of South Asian Muslims, African Americans, and Puerto Ricans.
Bald is Associate Professor of Writing and Digital Media. The documentary is an outgrowth of his book Bengali Harlem and the Lost Histories of South Asian America (Harvard University Press).
Beyza Boyacıoğlu, an alum of the CMS graduate program, served on the film as writer and editor.
